Question:

Can I use a 4 wire marine starter instead of the 3 I removed on my 1999 Bayliner 135 hp mercruiser? How?

I cant find the part number on the old starter, nor can i find the serial from the boat. please help

  1. Be CAREFUL!  these starters come in a 9 tooth and an 11 tooth pinion gear. if you use the wrong one, you will ruin your ring gear, which is a real expensive repair.  Best to remove the starter and take it to a dealer for indentification.  look on the flame arrestor cover, or the rocker cover for the serial#.  It may also be on upper gearcase.

  3. You can use the starter,but you need to be sure that it has the

    same drive gear on the end for matching your ring gear.Just count the number of teeth on the old one and make sure the new one is the same and you're good to go.Good luck.
