  1. Sure you can.  You won't get the maximum resolution that you would with a 1080p HDTV, but you can still do it.  It won't hurt anything either.

  2. As noted by others it will work, but with decreased benefit relative to 1080p.

However, it's worth considering that on a small screen (e.g. under ~40"), particularly if you sit further than optimum from the TV (which many people do), that upconverted DVDs will look only slightly less sharp than Blu-ray. Considering the higher price for Blu-ray disks and how few are really top notch quality you may not consider the performance/cost benefit worthwhile.

Keep in mind that Blu-ray is a premium price alternative to DVD -- not a replacement for it. It's a good choice for those who can benefit and are able to afford the higher costs, but not for everyone.

Quite a few people have decided Blu-ray isn't worth the extra cost ... while others find the improvement compelling. I therefore suggest you get a demo on a TV the same as yours (or at least the same size and resolution) of the same movie on DVD and Blu-ray --- watched from the same distance as you will use at home -- to see for yourself. That way if you decide to buy it will be with full confidence that you will benefit.

    Hope this helps.

  3. yes. make sure to connect your Blue Ray DVD player to the TV using the HDMI connections.
