Question:

Can I use a TiVo DVR with Comcast Digital Cable service?

I was wondering if I could use an HD TiVo with Comcast cable because the Comcast DVR is really sluggish, but mainly because I'd like to be able to utilize Amazon.com's Unbox program with my TV.

So is it possible to return the Comcast DVR and purchase a TiVo to work in its place? Would it be compatible with the cable service and be able to view shows in HD?

Any help would be great, thanks!

  1. I use TiVo with comcast. If you want to record in HD you will just have to get the Series 3 DVR from TiVo. Using TiVo box with comcast On Demand is kind of a pain. Since the TiVo box don't know when the movie starts you have to start and stop the recoding.

  2. Bravo 88 is correct.

There is actually two ways in which to install Tivo. The first is basically

out of the box setup where you would use Comcast's digital converter.

This would entail you to use the Infrared units that came with the Tivo.

You would lose the "Dual Tuner" function, and the only way you would get HD service is only if the converter is HD ..

The second way to install the tivo would be to call Comcast and request Two cable cards. (The Tivo 3 takes two cards, to enable the

    dual tuner)

The technician will come out and install the cable cards, he/she must

also "Pair" the cards through the Comcast system - which can be a

    pain in the A**....

The best cards to use in my experience would be the motorola *MCard* ...

  3. Absolutely. I've been using a Series 3 on Comcast since they first came out. You'll need to get a pair of cablecards from Comcast, though. That will allow you to  receive the HD channels, digital content, and any premiums you have. A technician will have to visit to install the cards.
