Can I use a cage like this as a rat cage, or do they need multiple levels?

that cage is fine,

but it's pretty boring.

i'm not sure if you've done your research,

but rats become very lonely if placed by themselves,

it's always recommended that you buy two.

Rats need large, multi-level cages much like ferrets. They should also be kept in same s*x pairs or groups and never alone.

You need multilevel cause Rats have alot of energy and that is what they do is run around there cage

You can definitely use a cage like that for a rat, as long as you give them time outside the cage. Also I would give him a wheel inside the cage.

another thing to consider is a hammock like for ferrets, and or a ledge that goes in the cage which are usually sold for chinchillas.
