I have a Dish Network DVR but I no longer have the service. I'd like to use the DVR to record programs from cable or from the regular over-the-air channels. Is there some way to use the dish DVR without subscribing to the service?

  1. Yes, but wont get channel information, so you can't schedule recordings or anything like that.

  2. Sorry it wont work, The dvr has to be hooked up to a satellite dish, and you have to have it activated. Not only that the dvr sends 18 volts out to power the dish, If you hook up your cable or TV to where it says satellite in you will cause severe damage. With out subscription service you pretty much have a paperweight. You can sell it, But if you owe on your bill the new owner will not be able to activate it.
