Can I use a hand mixer instead of a blender?

I'm making salad dressing.

you can mix it by hand if it mixes it properly. most recipes just call for blender because its the fastest, most convenient.

well a blender really blends the product to small pieces a blender does mix but not as quick but for making dressing yes you can use

probably.  if it doesn't emulsify, add a couple tsp. of dijon mustard to it and mix some more.

You can use anything to get the ingredients blended, from a fork, a whisk, a hand mixer, a stand mixer, or a blender. Sometimes the mess is much less than what is wanted with blender. It is hard to get the dressing back out of the blender and then get the thing clean again.
