Can I use a modem in place of a router to network 2 computers together?

I don't have a router, but I do have a spare modem.

  1. No.  Not with that modem.  If the PC's are close to one another, you can use a variety of other methods... Firewire, USB, Null Modem serial cable.

    Of the 3, Firewire is the easiest and fastest (assuming both PC's have Firewire (aka IEEE 1394 or iLink).
