  1. i would continue for heating pad it would help the snake more than the wood. hope i could help. you could use the wood but the heating pad would be better for it in the long run.

  2. yes it is

  3. Wood tops are fine, but you must have ventilation. Either a bunch of small holes, like 3/16 " or 5/32", or you can cut the center out and staple 1/4" hardware cloth(screen with 1/4" squares) over the hole. Keep in mind that really small snakes, like newly hatched corns and kings might be able to get through 1/4" screen, so if yours is that small, it may be able to escape.

If you have limited ventilation (like if you just drill a handful of air holes), you will want to be careful that the humidity is not too high, so use a small water dish. Also, as other said, check temps with a thermometer to make sure its not getting too hot. That should always be done anyways.

You will need to secure the lid. A nice heavy brick works well. Make sure you use wood that is thick enough that it doesnt flex, or it wont be as secure. 1/2' is ok, 5/8" is better. Personally, I use 5/8 high quality fiberboard. I cut mine to sit in the lip of the tank top, and cut it like a picture frame(about 2" wide all the way around), then staple the 1/4" hardware cloth underneath, being careful to trim pointy edges off the wire.  I like my tops better than the add-on petstore type, and have not had any escapes.

Dont get the wood soaking wet, or it will warp. A very little bit of moisture now and then is ok.

I use undertank heat for all my snakes, no heat lamps.

  4. It should be fine, just be sure to use a thermoregulator to insure proper temperatures. Many specialty snake enclosures have little or no venting, this makes it easier to maintain temps and humidity.
