no you wont be able to use SD cards on your 40gb...

only 60gb and 80gb have the proper slots for the memory cards

20gb, 40gb and new 80gb does not have slots for memory cards

YES! DEFINITELY. BUT YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT YOUR USB CARD READER IS USB 2.0 COMPLIANT. YOU CAN ACTUALLY USE USB HUB ALSO SO THAT YOU'LL HAVE MORE USB PORTS. :)
