Can I use blender to crush ice cubes?

will that damage the blade in long term usage?

Yes, of course!!!  If it is a good blender, you will have no problems!!!  Read the 'buttons'!!!  I do it all of the time!!!

I wouldn't try it because if you have the outside of your blender is glass it will smash. Or go to you tube and look up videos on it.

You can check the user manual of your particular blender but most blenders have a crush ice setting.  It works well and I use mine for this all the time.  The glass container is very strong and won't break from crushing ice.  

While sharpened to some degree, the blades aren't sharp like a knife.  They use speed more than sharpness to cut things.  The ice won't hurt them.
