  1. The Family discount is only available to holders of the Cartaviaggio card. You have to be a resident of Italy to get the card. If you're a resident somewhere else, you can get the Amica fare if one is available on the train you want to take.

    You can either buy tickets at the station or online. Usually, you don't need to get tickets in advance, but it's a good idea to reserve seats during holiday periods - especially this weekend or during Easter week. Stations in smaller towns may not have ticket vending. The machines in the town where I live were vandalized so many times that they no longer repair them. In such a case, there will be some alternative sites, often tobacco shops, that sell tickets. A list of vendors will be posted in the station.
