Can I use my American "Visa Check Card" while in Canada?

I'm an American, I live in Oregon. My high school choir is going on tour in about two weeks, and we'll be up in Vancouver and Victoria, Canada. I want to know if I can use my Visa Check Card to buy food and stuff while I'm in Canada, or if I'll have to get canadian cash. Thanks!
