Can I use my SA driver's license in other countries?

Its a standard license (car under3.5 ton, trailer) but I might be leaving for Europe soon (holiday) so I want to know... can I use my license there or how does it work?

  1. Lise is correct. If you go to the AA, you fill in a form and with a passport photo you take with you, they will issue you with an international licence.


  2. Yes, get an international drivers' permit, but also take your regular SA drivers' license with, to be safe - some rental companies (in Italy I remember) don't take the International permit, but accept the SA drivers license.

  3. Since 2000 in Europe you need an international driver's permit.  This is basically a translation of your home driver's license. You apply through your Automobile Association.  It is required in some countries (France for example) and optional in others.  It makes things a lot easier if you get in an accident or are stopped by the police for some reason.  It may also be used as secondary ID.

    Some car rental companies will not rent you a car or sell you insurance if you do not have an international permit.

  4. Go to the AA in SA and get an international drivers license, it last for a year.
