Can I withdraw cash, and where? Can I use it to purchase goods?

Is there a fee involved, to convert the pounds in my british bank account into euros?

  1. only if it has a visa / maestro symbol - even then you would a) face a standing charge b)get the amex rate for currency conversion. ou would have to know your pin in the shops as all have chip and pin machines installed

advice - get a Nationwide bank account - their debit card is visa - no fee for cash withdrawls/purchases in foreign countries and you will get the mid rate for your currency withdrawls - around 4-5% more than any other method of obtaining cash - late addition - no it is not acceptable

  2. i used my solo card in paris and yes there is a little fee however it takes a few days to show up on your statement and i took out less than i actually had to for the bank to sort the fee and for some reason i went overdrawn so if you do have an overdraft allowance on that card then you will be ok

  3. yes, there are lots of Cirrus to withdraw cash at machines. This is associated to the Mastercard cash machine. I think all Mastercard cash machines are also Cirrus (so... by extension... Solo :-) )

You will barely see maestro in Paris. but Cirrus, you will, and that's the same network.

    "Can Solo be used abroad?

If you have a Maestro logo on the back of your card, you can use it abroad wherever you see the Maestro sign, just as you would use Solo in the UK – but be aware that in some countries you may be asked to use your PIN as identification (as is now happening in the UK). If you have Maestro and/or Cirrus on your card, you can use it to withdraw cash at machines where these logos are displayed. Contact your bank for details of any charges you might incur when making transactions abroad."
