  1. Still need a passport...

  2. If you are traveling by air you'll need a passport.  If you're traveling by land or sea you (as a 16 year old) will need only a birth certificate.  This will change sometime in the relatively near future (they say summer 2009, but it could be pushed back more) such that you'll need a passport or a "passport card" even when you travel by land.  For more info on this new passport card thing, go here http://travel.state.gov/passport/ppt_car...

  3. You'll be okay if you travel by land.

Since January 31, 2008, U.S. citizens ages 19 and older

have been asked to present documents proving citizenship, such as a birth certificate, and government-issued

documents proving identity, such as a driver’s license, when entering the United States through land and sea

ports-of-entry. Children under the age of 19 have only been asked to present proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate.

Effective January 23, 2007, and pursuant to Section 7209 of the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 (IRTPA), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) implemented Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) document requirements for international air travelers arriving at or departing from United States air ports of entry.  Since that date, citizens of the United States, Canada, Mexico and Bermuda have been required to present a passport or other acceptable travel document recognized under WHTI.

  4. By land you must have a photo iD and birth certificate.  Social security card will not work.  If you are flying then only a passport will work.

You will be able to return to US with the same documents.

This is only valid until June 2009----then you must have a passport for ALL travel outside of the US.

  5. not anymore - you need a passport now.

  6. For now, but they will tell you to get a passport for future travels.  Eventually they will stop accepting the birth cert
