Question:

Can I use my own car to sit my driving test?

Since March I have been doing automatic driving lessons in my instructors car. However, last week I bought my own automatic car, fully insured for myself and have been having lessons with my boyfriend (over 21 with more than 3 years driving licence) everyday since then. My instructor intends to take me out tomorrow in my car so what I want to know is can I sit the test in my own car? If so what information will the DVLA want about the car? NB: I live in Northern Ireland.

  1. My husband got me a car before I got my drivers license. I was able to take my car and use it for the test. Just maybe sure everything is in working order and of course my husband is over 21 with more than three years driving experience.

    Good luck!

  2. Yes, and it can sometimes be more benficial as you might know the car better than a borrowed one from an instructor

  3. Yes you can use your car and the other poster was right the instructor was looking to get money from the people to use his car also be aware if you pass your test in an automatic car you will have to resit the test to drive a manual car but if you pass your test in a manual then you can drive an automatic on the same licence.Good luck with the test.

  4. Yes you can sit the test in your own car provided that you give the test centre notice of your intentions

But be aware that passing the test in that car will limit you to only driving automatic cars in the future.

Think about it- you will probably want to drive a manual at some point in your life and in order to do that you will have to resit the test in a manual car.

With the tests getting increasingly harder do you really want to do that? It's hard enough to pass these days- think what it will be like in the future

  5. i know here in england you can , but its best to stick with one car. every car is different to drive until you get used to it. i had my first car bought and it was sat on the drive for 3 months because my instructor recommended i didn't use it.

  6. yes

  7. UM YEAH! you'll probably have to..

  8. Yes, the DVLA will most probably want to know the make, model, the ownership details and the fact it is automatic transmission. Your local examination centre will be able to tell you the full information, as should your instructor.

  9. Yes.

  10. I'm from northern ireland too and my instructor told me one day that one of his students booked a test under her own car so I think you can. He was annoyed though probably cos he could have got money by lending her his car for the test. But I'm sure your instructor would know.

  11. Unless things have changed or are different in Northern Ireland, then the answer is yes provided your car is roadworthy and legal.
