Can I use my wireless router on a friend's internet connection?

Question

I have a laptop computer, and I want to run the internet on it at my friend's place.

He does not have a wireless router, but does have an internet connection. I want to take my wireless router and plug into his internet connection and have the internet work on my laptop downstairs.

I installed the router software on his desktop computer, and it shows that everything is working. When I try to run the internet on my laptop, it says there is no connection.

Are there any settings I need to change? Any suggestions?

Have you connect your laptop to your router wirelessly? it is showing IP address assigned? if not there might be a problem that your wireless connection to the router is not complete.

Now if you are confident your wireless connection is good, then there might be configurations issues on your wireless card. is the router set to do DHCP and you have a fixed IP on your wireless adaptor?

I donot see why not your laptop will work if the desktop is already working.

Make sure that you are connecting his internet connection directly from the broadband modem into the right port of your wireless router.

You can't connect from a wired router to your wireless router.

If your wireless router has a port for a wired connection, connect it to your laptop using a wired connection to see if the thing is basically working.

If it is, try the wireless connection with your laptop right next to the router.

You can use windows help troubleshooting to narrow down any further problems.

i would put your settings on connect automatically... if you have a static ip address (one you type in....the address could change......and could be a different DNS....) some companys make you call them to set up the router on there cable/dsl modems.... try that as the next step...

What kind of internet connection does he have? There aer some that you arent able to get a wireless conection out of ..
