I'm going to university (college) this fall.

You all know, In high schools students can use their nick names instead of real names. Also teachers call students by their nicknames.

Does colleges do that too?

I have my real name and another English name (which is nickname..), and people used to call me by English name.

What should I do..?

  1. When you meet new people they will call you whatever you tell them your name is.  Really named Horace but want to be Bob? I say go for it!

  2. Have people call you whatever you desire.  It is defiinitely a MORE free environment in all respects at college than high school, so don't worry.

  3. It depends on what kinds of classes you are in. In large lectures, the professor doesn't call people by name. You will only be putting your name on assignments and tests, and it better match with the name your college has for you.

In small classes, the professor gets to know every student. On the first day, they will go through their enrollment list with the class, and at that time you can say what name you like to go by.

  4. As long as your last name is on all paperwork you can usually go by any name you prefer.

  5. I registered under my nickname of Rick instead of Richard > didn't have any problem.
