Can I use ordinary milk instead of buttermilk?

Can not believe that 2 large supermarkets I went into did not sell this, or sour milk.

So is it a major problem if I just use ordinary milk. I am making upside down apple and cinammon cake.

I know that you can make your own using either lemon or white vinegar but I do not have either of those at the moment.

  1. You probably need buttermilk for an acid to react with baking soda. If the recipe calls for an item, don't omit it unless it's an add in, like nuts or chips. I would sour regular milk. One tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar added to milk to equal one cup. Let it sit for 5 minutes and proceed with your recipe. If you don't have these ingredients available, pick another recipe. The one you're trying to edit most likely won't work.

  2. Sainsburys sell buttermilk.

I prefer regular milk, less salty.

  3. You can buy vinegar instead of milk.

  4. I suppose you can, buttermilk is to make cakes more moist, and slightly chewy.

  5. Buttermilk is a milk that has started its decomposing process.

you can make the milk sour by adding lemon juice or vinegar, but you may want to add about 200ml yogurt to 1 L of fresh milk rather.

It makes a lovely butter milk.

In baking, butter milk is preferred because of the advanced ripeness of the milk.

  6. Not really a problem, but the texture and the richness will be different.  If you want a rich cake, add a little extra butter
