  1. After a bit of research it appears that culantro is a stronger-flavoured plant of the same family as cilantro.  You can use it but keep in mind the stronger taste when choosing amounts.

I would do a side-by-side comparison of the two before I determined whether or not to continue using coriander with my recipe.  Perhaps put a little of each spice with a mixture of the key ingredients and determine whether or not you want to continue.  In many countries outside of the United States, culantro is used interchangeably with cilantro, not coriander, which is ground from the seed of the cilantro.  I couldn't find any information about the use of the seed of the herb culantro, which is used for medicinal purposes, as well as an herb.

    When you use the word Coriander, are you talking about the seeds or the leaves?  If you mean to use coriander seeds, no you cannot.  If you mean the leaves (aka cilantro) then yes you can.

  7. coriander is the ground seed from a cilantro plant and tastes nothing like cilantro so......since culantro is stronger than cilantro, coriander would for sure taste NOTHING like culantro so I would not use coriander.

  8. I just read some of the answers. Bad assumptions can lead to wrong decisions. I have used both products in India. So I will try to answer in a different way.

    1. Coriander seeds (Dhania) are used as whole or ground to make curries. The ground corriander acts as an emulsifier.

    2. Cilantro (Fresh leaves of Coriander plant) are used as a garnish on most of the curries, and to make Chutney.

    3. Culantro Seeds (Jungli Dhania) are not used in making curry.

    4. Culantro leaves are sun-dried and used, when fresh Cilantro is NOT available.

    Unfortunately, the dried Culantro leaves are normally labled as dried Cilantro leaves.

    5. Cilantro leaves are NOT sun dried.

    6. In United States, the Culantro seeds normally come from either West Indies or Puerto Rico.

    7. In United States commercial packers of hotdogs use ground coriander in making hotdogs.

    8. In Unites States, Coriander is grown commercially to harvest Cilantro. Cilantro in United States is basically used to make Salsa as Tex-Mex Cuisine in Southwest

    9. In Mexico, and Pureto Rico Culantro leaves are used to make Salsa.

    10. The dried Culantro leaves are sold as Cilantro as well as Culantro in Mexico.

    Mexicco and Puerto Rico send dried Culantro leaves as 'dried Cilantro' for its Mexican food Industry.

    I am somewhat confused by the question. If you are asking about fresh leaves, the answer is yes. Cilantro leaves are just milder than Culantro leaves.

    If you are asking if Coriander seeds can be used as a substitute for Culantro seeds, the answer is I don't know. Most likely, you can. As I said earlier in my bulleted answer, Culantro seeds are not used in India, only the dried leaves are used. So, my knowledge is limited. My basic reservation is that I don't know if Culantro seeds have the same emuslifying property as corriander seeds.
