Question:

Can I use shortboard trucks on a longboard?

I have a set of standard skateboard trucks, and I was wondering whether I could simply transfer them across to a longboard deck. So, basically, whether the holes for the trucks are the same width and length apart on a longboard deck as on a shortboard deck.

  1. yeah, it should work, but turning will be hard if the deck is wide and the trucks are narrow, mine are only 7.6, so they wouldnt fit on my longboard which is 10 inches wide. give it a try though

  2. if they will feet i dont see why not............

you may have to redrill holes to attach em.

  3. shortboard trucks will "work" on a longboard deck if the deck is drilled in the "new school" bolt hole pattern.  Most serious longboards are drilled in the "old school" pattern.  they are the same width, but new school is shorter.  if you could tell me what trucks you have, and what deck you want, it actually makes a difference.  there are several problems with your trucks though. number 1: shortboard trucks are specifically made not to turn.  the kingpin and truck are mounted almost parallel to each other, and perpindicular to the ground, this means very little turning, even with a distance of 15-17 inches between the trucks.  imagine if you double that, you are essentially doubling the width of the turning radius, which is very bad.  you would barely be able to turn around in the circle of a cul-de-sac.  2:  shortboard trucks are very narrow.  with a narrower truck, you get less leverage, and you have less ability to put pressure on the trucks and turn.  3:  you won't be able to put your center of gravity over the edge of the board.  shortboard trucks are made to be turned by applying pressure with your toes and heels, not by leaning far past the edge of the board.  basically the centrifugal force of you turning won't be there, so if you try to carve you will keep leaning, and the board will keep going straight.  as any skater knows, board and skater going in opposite directions is bad.  There is one thing you can do.  I've never tried it myself, but if you buy some angled riser pads, you will increase the turning capability of your trucks.  whenever you use risers though, you have to be careful because you lose leverage on the trucks again.  this is the cheap 5 dollar solution.  if you want a real solution, you can go to daddiesboardshop.com and get two randal 150 or 180 mm trucks for 43 dollars and free shipping.  these are simply the best and cheapest trucks around for longboard carving and cruising, and they can even handle a little speed.  the best part is, they last forever, so you can sell them to some kid at the skate park for at least 30 bucks no matter how old they are.  I just hope you don't plan on using shortboard wheels on a longboard because that's another huge mistake.  if you need any help email at zaorox99@yahoo.com
