Question:

Can I use the Time Warner Cable DVR if I buy it seperately? Is it even a stand-alone unit?

I know that for an extra $6.95 a month, I can add a DVR. Is the $6.95 per month similar to a rental fee. Can I purchase the unit in full price from an outside source and use it, or will it be inoperable? If I bought a unit at full price I could save money in the long-run.

OR.. Is the DVR built in to the digital cable and not a stand-alone unit?

  1. Hello. I can guarantee with 100% that if you buy a DVR from an outside source, it will not work on the Time Warner system. I know of someone whp purchased one from ebay, only to get stiffed out of $200. They are all owned  by each local system. If sold, the renter is responsible for the cost of that box and will end up in collections, if they sell the box, the the buyer just bought stolen property. It is a no win situation. Bottom line, it is not going to work. Only the serial numbers that are attached to the specific Time Warner system will work, BUT the serial number needs to be attached to your account or it won't authorize.
