Can I use the ash (soot) from a chimney for my garden?

Since I have to clean out my chimney can I use the soot for mixing with the dirt in my garden?

I wouldn't it is not the same a using ashes from the burnt wood. Which is beneficial to some plants.

I believe that would be a bad idea there. The soot is not good for anyone to breath in.

I would get some wood chips from a garden Nursery for your garden instead. This will make it attractive and it will be a lot safer than soot.
