Question:

Can I use the word bimbo in a debate?

Do you think it is appropriate to use the word "bimbo" in a debate?

The context:

"As you can see, contestants are more than the blond bimbos you think of them as."

its talking about how contestants in beauty pageants ARE NOT bimbos, so its not really defaming them.

It's a grade 9 debate (13-14 years old).

Thanks.

  1. I would make it clear you are distancing yourself from that position by saying something like 'contesants are more than the blond bimbos that some perceive them to be' :-)

  2. If the word is included in your original position, as stated in the assignment, then it is fine...if you are just making a point, then there must be a better way.

For one thing, all beauty contestants are not blond, and this should be obvious to any observer.  Second, you are making the assumption that the other side is making the point that the contestants are bimbos, when they may not be arguing that point at all...defend specifics, such as intelligence ( I.Q., level of education, etc), not a vague term like "bimbo".

  3. It should probably be okay.

  4. hehe, yes i guess its better than floozy!
