Question:

Can I use white out on a vehicle title?

I bought a vehicle from a friend. They assumed I would want both mine and my husbands name on the title. I don't. I haven't done the title transfer or tagged it yet. The previous owner just put our names with " or " in between. Can I use white out on his name or will the previous owner have to get a title replacement and then put only my name? Thank you.

  1. No, you can't use white out.

It's possible your state won't allow the 'or' on the title.  You're going to have to call your dmv.

You do NOT need to get a new title issued - you can get a "title filled out in error" form from your dmv - much simpler, although you will have to have it notarized.

  2. NOO  that's actually a federal crime. If you don't have a loan on the car, then have the seller fill out an affidavit of correction saying they wrote your name in error, sign and notarize it, and put ONE LINE through the name you don't want on the title.

  3. You can't use white out.  simply take the title, the way it is now to the DMV and explain what happened.

  4. Definitly no. Previous owner will have to get new title if you don't want his name anywhere on the title
