Question:

Can I visit my boyfriend in a psychiatric hospital?

My boyfriend of over a year recently had a full blown psychotic/delusional episode a little over a week ago. The reason this happened was because he is probably bipolar but went to the emergency room at a regular hospital when he wasn't feeling right and they prescribed the wrong medication- an antidepressant that caused an extreme psychotic reaction for him. His mom told me that he was even catatonic at one point but as of 4 days ago he was starting to come back to normal. Anyways, I think he is probably feeling a little better by now and I was wondering if psychiatric hospitals allow visitors to visit their patients. (He is an adult- 24 years old and was committed involuntarily). THank you!

  1. You should call and ask. They have different policies about who can visit and when. Good luck. I know it seems scary, but if he gets properly diagnosed with bipolar and treated, things will get a lot better.

  2. i was addmitted to a psychiatric hospital involuntarily after tryin to commit suicide, and am also bipolar. well schizo-affective, bipolar type.

No, im sorry to say you wont be able to see him. Psychiatric hospitals permit only family members to visit the patient. Blood type family members.

Its best to let him have his time to recvover though. as much as i loved my girlfriend i didnt want her to see me like that. but he still gets calls doesnt he? we got calls on our free time, usually around dinner time and our evening break. if not, call the hospital where he is at and ask about phone privaledges, and visiting hours, and your ability to visit him since your his girlfriend. i hope you get to see him, i know from experience, the best part of being in the psych hospital, is when you see how much your family really cares and loves you.

  3. as far as I know (and from my experience) you can visit him in the psych hospital.  I've been there a few times and my husband has visited me every time I went.  I think that the only way you wouldn't be able to see him is if he didn't sign a paper that says he's there...I don't know waht it's called but everytime I went they told me that if I didn't sign the paper they coudlnt' legally tell anyone I was there...so no visitors.  I would suggest you go to the hospital and try to see him...if they dont' let you then you have your answer...IMO.

    Good Luck

  4. you should be able too, just call the hospital and ask them when visiting hours are

  5. Most places will let you visit him.  There's usually a little room set off especially for visitors.

I know because I just got out of a hospital about a week ago.  My family was able to visit me.  There was a locked room with a few chairs in it and you could go out of the room, but it had to be unlocked by a staff member to get into it, for the safety of the visitors.

I went to the ER and was also given a medication that sent me into a panic-driven state and ended up in the psych hospital the next day.

So yes, you can visit him as long as it is authorized by his doctor that he was assigned to when he got to the hospital.

  6. Every hospital has its own policies.

Generally speaking, if his condition is improving, and he's no danger to others, it should be ok.

Just call the information desk at the hospital and ask.

  7. because he was committed involuntarily, no you will not be allowed to see him, at least not without consent from his doctor.
