Can I volunteer from my home telephone?

Hi, I am an Italian residing in the States. In Italy they have "Friendly Voice", a free service for people who need somebody to listen to them over the telephone, especially for the elderly and disabled.

Is there a similar volunteer opportunity in the US?

Can you indicate where I could find it on the Web?
