Question:

Can I wait for the other person to report an accident to the insurance co.?

I got into a car accident 4 days ago. It was my car and the other one was a company's car. Not a big accident at all. But we still filled out a form.

I don't wanna declare to the insurance (personal reasons... not legal or financial or wtv). Can I wait for the other one to do it? He said he didn't know if his company would declare. It all depends on them. I obviously really don't want them to declare.

Does a company usually prefer declaring or just letting it go if it's minor?

  1. Read the contract you have with your insurance company. You have an obligation to report all accidents and/or damage done to your car, regardless if it's yoru fault or not, per your insurance policy contract. You are also required to report it to the DMV (if California). DO NOT wait for the other person to report it.

  2. You can call the company, and find out if they will report the loss to their insurer.  They should.  If they reported the loss to their insurer, ask for the telephone number and call them directly.

  3. The rules could be different since I'm in the US...but I would guess they are going to file a claim..even if there isn't much damage, it's a backup if the person decides later that they have neck pain or something.  When they do, your insurance will probably contact  you. It usually looks better if you contact your insurance company regardless. You don't have to open a claim just because you notify them. You can always check with your agent first in an almost "hypothetical" sense. Most agents will tell you the best way to proceed. Good luck.

  4. If you are involving insurance companies, you declare it to yours and he declares it to his. Was there a police report? Give your insurance company the report number and a copy of the form that you completed. Did you get the other person's contact number? Call them to see if they reported it. If you want his insurance to cover your damages (assuming it was his fault), then you have to make sure he reports it. Otherwise, he has no reason to report it - he could just cover his own damages and make up a story about how it was a one-car accident.

If you don't want to involve your insurance company, then have him pay for your damages out of pocket or you pay for them and forget about it.

The reason to have insurance is to cover damages - it's up to you if you use it or not.

  5. You both have to report it

  6. Not if you caused it .Was it a fender bender with no damage ; no injuries ? Any time an accident happens on company time ..with a company vehicle and doesn't get reported..no matter how small ..someone will get fired later when least expected . I don't get what you mean by "you both filled out forms" .It sounds like you already reported it .

  7. rules in canada may be different than the states, best to ask in yahoo answers canada

  8. I can't imagine any company just "letting it go".  It wouldn't make sense unless it was their driver's fault.
