Have a comforter-says Dry Clean Only. Due to cat hair, I need to clean it. Can I wash it on delicate cycle with cold water? I need to clean it bimonthly and can't afford to pay $60/month to clean it at the dry cleaners. It is made of Rayon, Cotton, Nylon, & Polyester. The inside is all polyester.

  1. I presume by comforter you mean the same as duvet in England. I have washed them quite often on 30 decree wash and shortest cycle.  Would not wash feather and down though.

  2. By all means you can wash it in cold water using a mild soap like wool lite.  But before you wash put into the dryer on air for a couple of cycles to remove the pet hairs.

  3. I would wash it in delicate/cold setting. I wash my down conforters all the time and they say dry clean only.

I try them in a medium/low setting. With the Rayon and Cotton their might be some shrinkage.

I also throw in 3 new tennis balls. You can buy them anywhere.

That puffs up the inside and helps prevent it from clumping. If it is not blocked, you just might want to hang dry it. Just make sure the padding is fully dry.

I wash all my down pillows and comforters in the washer and than throw in the dryer with a 3 tennis balls. It takes a long time to dry because of the low setting and you need to make sure the inside is fully dry.

Most things you can hand wash and lay flat to dry nowadays.

  4. I've done it.  Can't say for sure what mine was made from (I'm at work right now), but the comforter needed washed and I didn't want to pay the dry cleaner fees.  I didn't have any noticable damage.
