can I watch a movie in a DVD player with an extension name of .avi? and if not how can i convert it and in what extension name so that I can watch it in my DVD player?

  1. ".avi" is just a "container" file and doesn't really tell you what format the video inside is - it could be MP4 (divx), xVid, etc. Some DVD players will play .avi files - mine will play Divx but not xVid.

    The DVD standard is not a single file type - it is a collection of files. The actual video is in small (<1GB) VOB files, but without the whole DVD file structure a DVD player won't play it. There are conversion programs (Nero has it) for "mastering" video of different types to DVD. This will automatically add the required file structure and then allow you to burn it to disc.
