Can I work If I haven't received my green card yet but I am legal?

I just married an US citizen and Im in the middled of applying for a residency. I have everything ready I'm just waiting for my appointment. My legal aid person says that If I want to it wont be much trouble If I start working right now. I have my own social security number so I could work. My question is. Would I get in any trouble if I start working before they grant me a work permit?? a lot people say is not a big deal.

You aren't quite yet legal to work.. You should get work authorization within 90 days of sending in the I-765..

If you get caught, it will be a big deal.. I don't know what kind of legal aid person would say it was fine without actually have the legal authorization in hand?

Normally it is less then 2 months to get the employment authorization.. Working before your actually authorized to work could cause a big issue with your immigration. Heck, for all you know, you may have forgotten an answer on it somewhere and it could be getting sent to you right now with a request for more information.

It's not worth the risk in my opinion.. Though, no employer would probably hire you anyways because you don't have proof of employment in hand. A social security number isn't enough, if you're not a citizen, you have to show proof you are legal to work.

What kind of working authorization do you have?

When you say you have a social security what do you mean?

The solo fact that you have a  social security does not allow you to work.. The fact that you have a pending Adujustment of status, I-485 does not give you permission to work.

Most people when they apply  for residency via marriage also apply for work permit.

You must have a work permit I-765
