Like a new computer, tuition, software? I'm looking at over 5k for the supplies. I work full time and would like to change careers and go into graphic design and wondering if I can deduct this cost at tax time?

  1. NOPE, not with facts stated above

  2. If you receive money for tutoring people, your tutoring business (schedule C on you tax return) allows you to list many deductions, including miles for business, depreciation, supplies, computer, peripherals, etc.)  You are only able to deduct the items used exclusively for business, though.  Students cannot expense these items.  Keep in mind, that most tax laws are to deduct the "cost of doing business" against the income that the business generated.  Students don't generate business for themselves.  Start a business to take deductions.
