Can Istill get digital channels by using a digital box with only basic cable? No standard.?

I am trying to get digital cable but it costs too much..I know that if you have standard cable and get a digital cable. Could I get basic tv which are local channels only and hook up a box and get the digital cable as well?

To get a digital cable set-top box, you need to go through the cable company, so by going through the cable company to get the box, they are going to charge you anyway

To get digital channels over basic cable, you are going to want to get a digital tuner from a place like radio shack or Best Buy (the same ones that you can get those government coupons for), then you would connect and use it like you would use a digital cable set-top box
