Can John Mallinger keep his momentum going in the next season?
During the Frys.com Open, John Mallinger showed his true golfing skills and character. He led the championship for 36-holes before losing his way a little in the last round.
Mallinger has so far earned a total of $1,146,852, and he stands at the 79th position in the money earned list. However, there is just one stat of his that will worry him and his team, which is his inconsistency throughout the season.
Extremely good in one tournament and missing the cut in the next one has so far been the story of the American.
The momentum is on his side now, after a T4 finish at CordeValle, but will he take this momentum in to the next season and perform consistently is the main question.
Another aspect which he has to work on is that, he starts off the tournament really well but, in the last two rounds, he loses his way. He really needs to improve his finishing skills if he wants to taste more success on the PGA Tour.
The American started with a five-under 66 at Frys.com Open, which was followed by a magnificent show of flawless golf when he equalled the course record by shooting nine-under 62.
However, after that, two rounds of one-under and one-over ensured that Mallinger does not win his first title on the PGA Tour for now.
He had a similar show at Reno-Tahoe Open where he, once again, started off brilliantly but faded away in the last round.
It has been a similar story for Tiger Woods as well, this season. The only reason why he has not won a major this season is that he could not finish the tournaments on a high note.
Tiger too started each and every tournament brilliantly. He even led at the US Open but could not capitulate in his earlier success.
Finishing a tournament on a high, even though one has not won it, but shooting some low scores in the last few rounds, really boosts up a player’s confidence.
In the last five events that Mallinger has played on the PGA Tour, he had a fourth place finish at Reno-Tahoe Open. Then he missed the cuts in the next two tournaments.
The missed cuts were followed by a T22 finish and now a T4 finish at Frys.com Open.
If Mallinger becomes just a little more consistent with his performances, then certainly this momentum will help gain more success in the 2013 season.
He just needs to play it intelligently in the last few rounds. Maybe, it is the nerves that get in his way. However, whatever the reason may be, he must become more consistent.
