Can Jose Mourinho be Alex Ferguson of Real Madrid?
Jose Mourinho, as he has been outrageous all throughout his managerial career, has recently sparked an intriguing debate with an audacious claim that he wants to emulate Sir Alex Ferguson’s achievements but not at the theatre of dreams instead at Bernabeu.
The Portuguese surely knows how to remain in the limelight no matter what the world thinks, he always does something special which makes him one of the sorts out personalities in world football.
His attitude and arrogance have already earned him the nickname of ‘The Special One’. But, it is highly unlikely that he will be able to repeat his successful stints of Inter Milan and Chelsea at Real Madrid.
On the other hand, Alex Ferguson has transmitted Manchester United into one of the most dominating football clubs. He had taken over the United role in 1986, when the Old Trafford side had lost its glory days while Liverpool were ruling the English League.
But, during his tenure Manchester United have not only displaced Liverpool as England’s best club but also went on to rule the Premier League for several years. So, Alex is a master as well as a one club legend.
Whereas, Mourinho’s case has been quite different from that of Ferguson as the former always took on the sides who were already dominating their leagues apart from Chelsea. When Jose took on FC Porto, they had already won two domestic leagues but in his
first venture, this side went from being the champions to runners up. Still, one must appreciate Jose’s role in guiding Porto to a UEFA Cup and also a Champions League win.
When Jose Mourinho came to Chelsea, some great amounts of money were available there as Roman Abrahamovic, the Russian billionaire was backing him to sign any player he wished on somewhat unrealistic prices. Although, Mourinho won the Premier League twice
with Chelsea but he still wasn’t able to satisfy his Russian owner, who seemed thirsty for a European success and in the end fell out of favor with Jose as he had failed to deliver a Champions League trophy that was eluding from Chelsea’s trophy Cabinet.
Ho then took on another power house of football, Inter Milan, who were already the champions of Italy before his arrival. So, on that account domestic success doesn’t count much but he was able to inspire the blues of Milan to win the Champions League. It
was Mourinho’s second success in the Champions League which made him only the third manger in history to have won CL with two different clubs. Mourinho seems to have made all the right moves but he has been helped by the fact that all his sides were already
dominant.
But now, he faces the biggest challenge of his life with Real Madrid as he has been brought in to displace their arch-rivals, Barcelona, and to become the best side in Spain. Furthermore, Mourinho is on a mission to help Galacticos to yet another CL crown,
which will take the mighty Real into double figures. They have previously won the CL for a record nine times.
Mourinho’s claim of being the Ferguson of Madrid looks far from reality as he faces a daunting prospect of Barcelona in the domestic league while the likes of AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Inter Milan and Chelsea in the European journey, who
will all be looking to spoil the party for Mr. Arrogant.
The Portuguese has also been lucky that like Real, he always had star-studded squads with no shortage of talent on any corner of the pitch. He has bought the star winger Angel Di Maria, his old guard Ricardo Carvalho, German starlets Mesut Ozil and Sami
Khadera in the summer transfer window boosting the squad, which already had the likes of Ronaldo, Kaka, Xabi Alonso, Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain.
