I heard lava rock can be used instead of live rock, and it is cheaper, but takes longer for it to acquire bacteria, but is it safe/usable?

  1. The reason why many aquarists avoid lava rock is that it often contains iron. If the iron dissolves in the tank, then it can cause metal poisoning in the animals.

I know it's cheaper, but if you get a piece that has any iron it, you'll end up wiping out the tank and needing to start all over again (including pulling out the water and starting the cycle process all over again), and you'll still need to get something other than the lava rock. The cost savings isn't worth all that hassle.

  2. I have two pieces in my aquarium and they are fine, but you are going to want to get live rock because on live rock there are organisms that help with the nitrification cycle. You can add as little or as much as you want, but more live rock is better.

  3. Yes but be very selective when choosing your pieces cuz if it has sharp edges then it can cut or scrape your fish if they get startled & dart to close. & clean them very good before adding them. I personally would boil them in hot water for 20 to 30 mins before you put them in your tank.
