Can Lee Westwood win the next major event?
Lee John Westwood is one of the best golfers in the world. Over the years, he has proved himself to be one of the best on the course.
Westwood was born on the 24th of April 1973, and turned professional in the year 1993. He entered the list of the top-ten players in the world in July 1998.
Tiger Woods has dominated the world of golfing for quite some time. Woods’ reign ended in the year 2010. It was then time for Lee Westwood to step up and take Tiger Woods’ place to become the world’s number one.
Westwood stayed at the number one spot for 22 weeks. Then, it was time for someone else to claim the rank of the world’s number one. Currently, Westwood is at number 3 in the world ranking.
Westwood’s first professional win was in the year 1996 and ever since he has bagged 39 professional titles.
Out of these 39 wins, 22 were on the European Tour, 2 on the PGA Tour, 4 on the Japan Golf Tour, 6 on the Asian Tour, 3 on the Sunshine Tour and 1 was on the PGA Tour of Australasia.
Throughout his career, Westwood has shown consistency. He has always been a strong contender for the trophy. He has never disappointed his fans and he has always been able to deliver at the end.
That being said, Westwood does not seem like his usual self this year. This year has been quite uneventful for the world’s number 3. He has not been able to deliver like he has consistently done before.
Till now, his only win this year was at the European Tour’s Nordea Masters. In this particular event, he has five top-5 finishes.
Undoubtedly, Lee Westwood is one of the best, but the facts to not side with him. He is the only player who has been on the number one in the world ranking and has not won any major.
The closest he got was in the year 2010, when he finished second in two major championships.
Westwood finished 2nd in the year 2010 in both Masters Tournament and The British Open Championship. In the years 2008 and 2011, he finished 3rd in The U.S Open and he finished tied 3rd in the year 2009 at the PGA Championship.
From Westwood’s previous records, it can be seen that he does not have a very top class record in the majors.
As one would expect from a player who was once the World’s number one, he remains deprived of a major title. These facts make Westwood’s chances pretty shaky in the majors.
Westwood is very determined to win a major event now. He is well aware of the time he is left with to win one.
In an interview, Westwood said, “I haven't got that much time left at the top and I want to give myself the best chance of staying there as long as I can”.
Keeping all the facts in mind one cannot ignore the performance of Westwood and he has been very close to winning in numerous events. He might have been unlucky previously, nonetheless he could still win the next major.
It is a well known fact that he has been always a strong contender in any tournament that he plays, even the majors. All he needs to do now is to focus on his game and use the right tools for his game.
