Can Lily of the Valley be grown in a Flower Box?

This is one of my favorite plants but I do not have a yard / flower bed to grow them in. If I can grow them in a flower box I will get one for under my kitchen window. Thank you

Also, if you know, please tell me if Pansies and Foxglove can also be grown in a flower box along side the Lily of the Valley?

Thanks so much.

  1. Pansies will grow well in your flower box, just make sure they aren't in direct sun all day, and keep them watered.

I have never tried growing lilies of the valley in a container, they are a perinneal and do better in the ground. You could put them in a large barrel type planter and possibly grow them, but to get them to come back, you have to leave them alone for the whole year. If you wanted them just for one year, I suppose you could dig them up in early spring and transplant. Just find a person with a big plot of them and they will be sure to share. Every time I take a clump out, it fills in even better the next year. You could also buy them from a mail order catalog and try, but they can be quite expensive this way if you cannot keep them in the ground as a perinneal.

Both pansies and lily of the valley grow better in part shade, in a cooler climate.

Not sure on foxgloves. Best bet would be to go to a traditional greenhouse/nursery (not a department of a chain store, but a privately owned one) and ask for some ideas.

Generally, flowers in flowerboxes are annuals, and once they stop blooming, you replace them with something else more colorful. It can be a fun way to brighten your world! Have fun with it!
