Can Luke Donald win a major this year?
Luke Donald, the winner of the Transitions Championship, is heading to the first major of the year, scheduled to be held from April 5 to 8, 2012.
The 34-year-old English professional golf player displayed amazing performances in the recently played PGA Tour events in the US.
However, the most frequently asked question of this week is: Can Donald win a major this year? All the players and golf lovers are eyeing the Masters Tournament, the first major of the year.
Donald's performance is the most interesting feature of current times. Most of his fans are hoping to see his debut victory of the major this year.
Donald was the hottest and the most successful golf player of the year 2011. He achieved several honours and awards.
His appealing performances on both the PGA and European Tours took him to the highest position in the Official World Golf Rankings.
However, since January, the Englishman has faced difficulties scoring on both the tours. He displayed an average performance at the season opening tournament of the European Tour.
It was the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, where he finished on the 48th position. Later he moved back to the United States and played the PGA-staged Northern Trust Open.
He again faced fearsome rivals on the course and recorded the 56th position at the end of the day.
Then, he showed his professional game at the World Golf Championships – Accenture Match Play Championship.
He somewhat improved his scoring average and driving, by finishing the event at the 33rd
place.
In February, he played two events and was impressive against the other field members. He finished tied for the 6th position at the Cadillac Championship and also won the title of the Transitions Championship.
His biggest rival since day one has been Rory McIlroy. The 22-year-old Northern Irish professional has played tremendously since January.
He defeated Donald in the OWGR list, by winning the Honda Classic and by finishing as a runner-up at the Accenture Match Play Championship.
McIlroy gave a tough time to the 2011 PGA Tour Player of the Year. However, Donald is fit now and has started showing impressive performances again.
The Englishman reclaimed his world no. 1 ranking position from McIlroy, after winning the title of the first PGA-staged event. This was the biggest comeback for any golfer in the current year.
McIlroy praised Donald for snatching back the glory. He said, "Well I enjoyed it while it lasted. Congrats Luke Donald! Impressive performance!"
Donald said in return, "I still think Rory and obviously Tiger will be getting a lot of the attention. I can kind of go about my business and not have to deal with as much as those two are dealing with".
Donald's performance in the previous month was one of the best. He won a title and also claimed his ranking position back. He is doing well and is now eyeing the Masters.
In 2011, Donald finished the Masters tied on the 4th position. Similarly, he also impressed his fans by securing the 8th position on the PGA Championship, another major.
Since turning a professional in 2001, he has performed well in the major events. His best was again at the Masters in 2005, where he recorded the 3rd position impressively.
There are ample chances for the Englishman to become the proud winner of a major this year. If it is not at the Masters Tournament, then it is highly expected that the PGA Championship will be the one.
