I didn't think they could get viruses. but now i am worried because my isight (built-in camera) hasn't been working for a couple if weeks now, it doesn't even detect that i have ever had a camera. and now safari is running really slow, and i have never before had a problem with that.

the computer is a little more than a year old. so i really don't see why it is acting this way.

please help.

  1. Yes Macs CAN get viruses!!

  2. the problem is MAC get a PC.

  3. Mac's can and do get viruses, although Windows is an easier target as it is more widely used and inherently less secure.

Download ClamXav free from the vendors site:

Please note: This software has the ability to move files on your computer, therefore it is absolutely vital that you back up any important data before running ClamXav.

  4. Yes, Macs can get viruses, but it's rare.  Very few people write viruses for Macs, though the number is going up as more people are driven to Mac by Vista.

Also the problem you're describing doesn't sound like a virus.  I would recommend calling Apple (1-800-MY-APPLE) and seeing if they have any advice.  They have a good tech support department.

  5. every computer gets viruses, if you dont an anti-virus program installed

  6. yes absolutley.

i had a mac that i had downloaded limewire onto,

and after a few months of downloading music,

it failed to start one day.

when i took it to the apple store, they told me that the motherboard had crashed.

and because there was nothing else on my computer that could have caused it, i am lead to assume that it was limewire that caused it.

  7. sadly, yes Macs can get viruses. Limewire tends to make it worse because of the way it was made to share files and music (peer-to-peer connections) and hackers take advantage of that to easily spread viruses and adware.

I suggest a full virus scan on your Mac.

  8. yes they can get virus's but here's the thing

Usually when downloading something the virus is made for a specific operating system.. As more and more people switch to macs virus's are starting to become more universal..

    My suggestion: www.virustotal.com

  9. The mac now runs intel hardware so yes it can

  10. yeah i used to have lime-wire and it messed up my comp actually both of them

my comp started to run slow

and then it went to safe mode

and it got tons of viruses

it wasnt cheap to get them fixed

  11. probably

thats why you should buy your music and stuf from itunes like i do

  12. the probability of your mac getting a virus is like 1 in 10*10to the power of 100(1 googol)

i relly dont think you have a virus mabe you have a lot of web applications

and your eyesight got knocked or something

    because it is really fragile

  13. Most likely. It doesn't matter on the system.

I would think that a program that isn't really "recommended" by many would give you a virus.

    Go see a computer doctor.

  14. It's pretty simple to understand why there are more viruses on Windows than on OS X: more people use Windows than OS X. Hackers generally target the biggest nail in order to reach a much larger audience.

There is no such thing as a "perfect" operating system. As more people move to mac computers, so do more hackeres exposing the security flaws. Every piece of software is going to have some kind of exploit, but there are several things you can do in order to keep yourself safe no matter what PC or operating system you use.

    1. Be careful what type of sites you visit. There are many unscrupulous websites out there that will readily infect your machine with a virus or adware.

    2. Instead of downloading music, go to the store and buy the CD or buy the MP3’s from legit sites. Not only will you avoid any financially difficult legal situation, you'll also avoid any website that promises free MP3 downloads but only delivers viruses and adware.

    3. Instead of looking for software cracks or serials online, look for coupons. The "crackz" scene is filled to the brim with malicious websites. You're not safe when you're visiting these "seedier" websites.

    4. Do not run in Administrator mode. You should only run in Administrator mode when you're installing hardware or software, but running in a lower security mode you'll avoid a lot of the more invasive attacks.
