Can Manchester City wreck Manchester United’s title chances?
Once termed as 'noisy neighbours' by Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester City has now turned into a title contender for the English Premier League top spot. As Manchester United prepare to take on their next door rivals this up-coming weekend, one does wonder
whether City have the capability to turn the tables on Fergie’s title chances. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Mancini-c23323’s men have been above average thus far in the English Premier League. If they do have any issues, it’s not because they don’t have the players to make it to the summit of
the English Premier League but because their formation has not been able to accommodate all of their best players in their respective positions.
Currently in third place in the Barclay’s Premier League table, Manchester City has been doing enough to keep the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United within firing range. With a total of 49 points from 26 league games, the Blues now find themselves just
one point behind Arsenal and five points behind the league leaders, Manchester United. This weekend, Manchester City will travel across town to Old Trafford to face the Red Devils in one of the most anticipated title clashes in recent history.
City’s rise to the top three of the table has truly been a rags to riches story. After escaping from almost certain relegation trouble in the 2006-2007 Premier League season, the Blues were the subject of a massive takeover bid from Thaksin Shinawatra. However,
financial troubles forced the former Thai Prime Minister to sell the club to Sheikh Mansour. The sheikh, who belongs to Abu Dhabi’s royal family, invested heavily in Manchester City as the club went on a shopping spree welcoming the likes of Robinho, Toure,
Adebayor alongside David Silva and most recently Edin Dzeko amongst other names.
Manchester City has the finest strike force in the English Premier League. City recently loaned out http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Emmanuel-Adebayor-c12526 to the Spanish giants, Real Madrid, but they do have David Silva, Edin Dzeko and Carlos Tevez in their attack. This creative force is supported
by the defensive wall of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Joleon-Lescott-c18941 while Alexander Kolarov and Paolo Zabaleta provide them with solidity on the flanks.
All in all, Mancini’s men do look like an outfit which can pose a threat to United’s title on Saturday. Manchester United lost their last league match against the Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineaux stadium. The loss to Wolverhampton also prompted an
unexpected halt to their 29 match unbeaten streak in the Premier League. Sir Alex Ferguson has emphasized that the best of his teams are the one’s which bounce back in the face of adversity. Such character is what defines champions according to the Scotsman.
Regardless, a loss to Manchester City on their own home turf will not only damage Manchester United’s title chances but will also inflict irreparable damage to their morale. Last season, United crumbled after an away defeat to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions
League. That defeat defined their season as United went onto self destruct in the UEFA Champions League as well as the English Premier League title race.
Can a defeat to their immediate rivals have the same disintegrating effect? City’s triumph at Old Trafford will cut down Manchester United’s lead to just two points. With ‘squeaky bum time’ approaching fast and thick, Roberto Mancini will be l*****g his
lips before the game against Sir Alex Ferguson’s men.
