Mark installs drywall. On this job, he is using sheets that measure 5 feet by 9 feet. A room 19 feet by 13 feet by 9 feet high is his next task. He is not dry-walling the ceiling or the floor. Can Mark complete the room without cutting 1 or more of the sheets?

  1. No.  You must cut 4 sheets.

  2. no.  none of the dimensions are equally divisable by 5.  If he stands them up, so the sheet runs top to bottom, 9feet, neither 19 nor 13 are divisable by 5, so he'd have to cut a piece.  If he lays them sideways, the sheets are 5 foot wide and the height of the ceiling is only 9 foot, so again, he'd have to cut a piece.

  3. You need to calculate the perimeter of the room first.  2L + 2W, so that would be 64 feet.  The room is 9 feet high, so the total wall area to be drywalled is 64 x 9 or 576 SF.  Each piece of drywall is 45 SF.  576 is not evenly divisible by 45, so he would need to cut at least one sheet.

You could also look at it logically - the room and the drywall sheets are both 9 feet tall.  So if he starts in one corner with sheets that are 5 feet wide, he will be at either 10 or 15 feet, and would have to cut the next piece to make it fit either a 13 or 19 foot long wall.

  4. No he cant because the wall dimensions are not multiples of 5 and the plaster is and you cant flip the sheets the other way so the only way to do it is to cut it.

  5. No.

Any wall would require at least on cut.
