  1. This is not a "Macintosh or Windows" issue.

You can use that miniDVD in your computer ONLY if the DVD drive in that computer is a drawer loading DVD drive - NEVER put a 8mm (small) or other oddly sized/shaped disc in a slot loader - whether Mac or Windows or whatever.

If the DVD drive is a slot loader, you have two options to get that video into a computer (again, not Macintosh or Windows specific):

Get another (usually external) drive that is a drawer loader (I like LaCie's). This will provide best video quality. If you want to edit the video with iMovieHD, you will need to rip the video with something like HandBrake:

The other option is to step down to analog:

Using the AV cables with the camcorder that you would normally use to connect the camcorder directly to a TV, connect the camcorder to an "analog/digital bridge". Pinnacle has a Macintosh version that uses USB:

but the Canopus products using a firewire connection will yield better video quality:

  2. Yes you can, but you will have to finalize the disc and convert the files.

You will have to finalize your dvd in the camera and then put the dvd in your computer's DVD burner (top loading only) and then you will have to convert the files (I downloaded handbrake file converter free) and import them into your editing program. Use the HELP feature in your editing program to learn about editing. Once you are ready to burn, your project will be burned to a different DVD and you can file the original away.
