Can Mike Redmond make a difference to Miami Marlins? - MLB Part 1
As former catcher Mike Redmond takes charge of Miami Marlins as skipper, fans ask questions whether he can be successful. Apprehensions of the fans after the Marlins switched from one manager to another in the last few years are understandable. They just
cannot believe that Redmond has the credentials to live up to their dreams even if he possibly possesses the ability.
Any team that fails to address the fundamentals in the first place is bound to collapse. All the advertisement the officials of the club make of the hyperbolic moves taken by them cannot render their side the sustainability needed.
While the publicity based on irrational assumptions can draw the attention of the fans and the experts for a while, it is destined to prove as the catalyst of the disaster ahead.
The Marlins committed the fatal mistake by forgetting the impact of their tall claims that they made the fans know. They did not account for the backlash in case the things did not happen the way they planned. Excited by certain moves undertaken by the club,
their officials established the belief that they have become a playoffs calibre team.
Unfortunately while they expressed their enthusiasm, the Marlins’ fans gave birth to the sentiments in their mind that they have reached a level which is boasted by any big Major League club. As a result, they grew resistant to the notion that they are somewhat
the same team as they were in the last few years.
An epic struggle in 2012 regular season hurt them immensely, not because their side was massively competent but the fact they heaped excessive hopes on the players. Fed by the unrealistic optimism shown by the owner and the rest of the crew, they could not
think of going to such lows.
The disappointment triggered the search for the scapegoat, which they found one in the form of Ozzie Guillen. The Marlins were successful in spreading the impression that Guillen was the main weak-link and that without him the substantial improvement in
the performance would have been made.
The fact of the matter is that the club is replete with flaws in every department of the play. No matter what manager they acquire, their run of failures is going to continue. Mike Redmond is quite possibly another scapegoat in the making.
His skills as a manager may be ideal for the Marlins but what will he do with them if the side he is going to lead is devoid of the basis required to perform at the Major League level. It is just like asking the house builder to construct a beautiful structure
without providing him with the clay, sand and the cement.
While enthusiasm of Redmond over finding the managerial job is admirable, it will be unfair to expect him producing wonders on his own.
On the question of his aptitude as skipper, Redmond has looked into the past and shared an incident where he was predicted by somebody that he will be managing players one day.
"I sat on the bench a lot," Redmond said. "It's well documented. And I watched. I learned. I asked questions. I pumped my teammates up. I did the things I knew would help a team win. And now as a manager, I know what to do. I know what buttons to push, and
I can't wait to get going. I wish spring training started tomorrow."
He has explained that he is capable of stabilisng the tumultuous organisation.
