Can Mike Redmond make a difference to Miami Marlins? - MLB Part 3
While expecting Mike Redmond to lead the Miami Marlins to heights of success in just one year of his presence there is unreasonable, there are ways that he can follow to initiate the beginning toward taking the team to glory.
First and foremost task he has to perform at the moment is to bring change in the attitude of the players as well as the whole managerial staff including the top officials.
Just like a leader who recognises the root cause of the problem better than others, he has to show sobriety and confidence in his contentions.
Redmond cannot afford to be compliant, even if that means creating enemies. He just cannot build a strong resume as skipper for the future if he submits to everything the owner says to him. He must ensure that what he holds in his mind regarding the betterment
of the club prevails.
The worst thing Redmond can do is to accept the responsibility for improving the performance without mentioning before the management that the Marlins currently struggle with fundamental loop-holes.
Before he unleashes his plans for transforming the Marlins into a lethal Major League Baseball unit, he must lobby for introducing a new mindset in the club. Showing the officials and the fans the face of the reality successfully will be his first achievement.
If he can create an impression in the team that they cannot progress unless the problems are addressed comprehensively, he can earn the satisfaction that he has started the journey toward the desired destination.
If he lets the officials know the real weak-links and force them to act immediately for their rectification, he will do a great service to the club.
The fact Redmond is a humorous and jolly character lends credence to the assumption that he can handle the intricate matters comfortably. This can also mean that he easily bypasses the recommendations of his superior officials if he feels that they cannot
serve the purpose, without letting them realise that he has mistreated them.
Unlike Ozzie Guillen, he will not lose his temper in the face of disagreements with his counter-parts.
The kind of personality that Redmond has, according to the past experiences, he can hold more resolve in the face of uncertain circumstances.
One can view Redmond as a kind of person who is always looking for jokes but the one that will never compromise over his will.
The apparent fun seeking face and the inner determination make Redmond an ideal person to deal with the owner of the Marlins. He certainly can diplomatically reduce the impact of Loria on the team without offending him.
Three-year contract signed by Redmond can provide him with ample room to exercise his vision for the team if he is allowed to stay until the expiry of the deal.
The Marlins changed one manager after another in the last couple of years. The extent of their volatile attitude with regard to dismissing managers has made the fans sick and angry. They are calling for stability. Hence they are raising a voice for letting
a single manager carry out the job for some years and understand the ins and outs appropriately.
In turn, they are fighting a case for Redmond that his position is not touched for some years. Thus, there are more chances that Redmond gets the opportunities that his predecessors did not enjoy.
Subdued by criticism over being irascible and prone to immediate changes, owner Loria is also under pressure to ensure that this time around his manager completes the contractual tenure. He will most likely let Redmond have reasonable enough time and do
what he can to produce results.
Above all the fact the Marlins’ officials have lowered their expectations can help Redmond avoid becoming a scapegoat in case the team repeats the same performance of the last year. In-short it is highly possible that Redmond spends three years in the club.
