Can Mold in Basement grow on Drywall?

I heard mold only grows on a porous substance like wood. Now I think it's appearing on my drywall. What can I do? Should I paint the drywall with Dry Lock paint to make the drywall non-porous so that the mold won't grow?

  1. mold will grow on drywall if it has paper on it ,they make a paperless drywall today,so mold will not grow on it ,you have to get rid of the mold first before you paint, lots of good products out there today, check with your cleaning stores, be careful some mold are bad for your health, good luck.

  2. Yes indeed. You should have seen some of the photos after Katrina...mold will grow in the paper on the front and back of the drywall. For this reason I ma using a gypsum board substitute is some new construction...magnesium oxide sheets. It also doesn't crumble when it gets wet like Sheetrock will. You can see it in photos on the link below.

Meanwhile, G-P and other companies are advertising gypsum board w/ mold resistant coverings instead of ordinary cardboard. All this since the hurricanes...Ivan Dennis, and Katrina.

  3. Yes mold can grow on some drywall, you can get Paperless, moisture and mold resistant wallboard called DensArmor™ Plus® Interior Wallboard at Lowes. I hope your drywall didnt get wet, if it did actually get wet see if you push it in and get rid of it or mold will keep coming back to the same spots.  If not and the mold is just growing from somewhere else. Just scrape it off and repaint it with Zinsser  Gallon Perma-White Mold & Mildew-Proof Interior Paint. Its great stuff.

  4. hi, dry wall is an organic substance and can be a breeding environment for toxic mold. you need to replace the drywall and fix the leak. toxic mold will kill you

  5. 1st find out what the source of dampness is. Remove all drywall that has mold and get it out of the house, the rest will need to be treated to kill the mold on non replaceable materials. There must be a waterproofing or ventilation, or climate control with air conditioning or a dehumidifier.

Mold will grow on anything that is damp and has no heat or sunlight to dry things out.
