Can My Amblyopia hurt my other eye if i dont wear a contact?

my left eye is 20/40 but my right eye is 20/15, my parents say that i should use a contact for my left eye so that it can become balanced with my right eye, BUT i see perfectly fine because my right eye is dominant, so i see perfect throughout the day, the only time my vision is affected by Amblyopia is when im trying to use the peripheral of my bad eye. my question is, will not wearing a contact to balance out my two eyes have a negative effect on my bad eye or my good eye, will either eye get worse? i heard that after a certain age the "lazy eye" cant get any worse, is this true? or can my right eye be correcting for my left eye so much that it itself gets worse, someone please help.

thank you

  1. lol ive never met someone with amblyopia other than me..but nah it prolly wont cause any probs but  i would recommend doing wat ur doctor tells u

  2. It doesn't sound like you actually have amblyopia. Most people have one dominant eye that they unconsciously use to line up objects. The way you can tell that is to hold up a finger at arm's length and use it to line up with a straight vertical object. Close one eye and then the other and see which one is perfectly lined up and which one jumps to the side. The one that is lined up is the dominant eye.

The reason I don't think you have amblyopia is because my sister has it and I know what it does. Her condition was not successfully treated and while she can see out of her bad eye, the vision is very weak. She pretty much sees out of only one eye and has poor depth perception.

  3. You must tell more about your situation.  Is your left eye corrrectable with a lens?  A lens won't correct amblyopia.

  4. Amblyopia is when one eye has poor vision that is NOT correctable with glasses or contacts. If the bad eye can be corrected to 20/20

it means that you simply have unequal vision (anisometropia).

I have a similar problem to you- my left eye has perfect 20/20 vision and my right eye is about 20/200. I usually wear glasses only when I want to see distance and not for any near work. Its unlikely that your good eye will get worse whether you use glasses or not- this has been the case for me, but I do believe that my right eye got worse because I wasn't using my glasses as often as I should.

If you find that your left eye is bothering you, then use a contact to help balance out your vision. If not its up to you whether to use contacts or not.

  5. If your vision is correctable in your left eye, you do not have amblyopia.  You have uneven vision.  I have a similar situation to yours.  My right eye is 20/20 and my left eye is 20/50.  I wear a contact lens in my left eye when I go out and my glasses at home when needed usually while watching TV or playing video games..

Wearing the contact lens has improved my depth perception and reduced the headaches I would get while driving and performing other activities that require good distance vision.  It has impacted my right eye in a positive way in that it does not have to do all the work anymore.

I suggest that you try out the contact lens and see how it goes.  If it does not work for you, then you do not have to continue with it since your right eye has normal vision.
