  1.       Only if you have an HDMI switching receiver and you connect HDMI from PS3 to receiver.

  2. it can send the latest audio codecs via HDMI, including 7.1-channel Dolby TrueHD

  3. Yes some of the new Bluray movies with TruHd or DTS-HD are encoded with 7.1 surround sound.

The other way is to engage Dolby ProLogic IIx, it will convert all stereo and 5.1 sources to 7.1 "simulated" surround, and actually doesnt do that bad a job, but nothing like getting 7.1 discrete sound channels as in the new Bluray audio codecs.

You will have to go to Playstation.com and download the latest firmware update on a flash drive and install it to the PS3 (or use ethernet connection from computer) and once you download the newest firmware update it will now be able to decode and transmit the new DTS-HD audio codecs.

Most PS3 players in stores have not been updated to the latest firmware yet, hence why you need to do it yourself.
