Can Paula Creamer and Michelle Wie overcome their poor form?
With major tournaments on the horizon, the question on many fans’ mind is, can Paula Creamer and Michelle Wie recover their previous good form?
To answer the question, experts turn to their performances in 2010 and 2011. If history has a knack of repeating itself, the answer will very much be a ‘yes’.
Paula Creamer has a distinguished career. She has an astonishing 11 wins in her record. These wins include 9 LPGA events.
She is also the winner of the 2010 U.S. Women's Open. This is perhaps the most cherished moment in her golf career.
U.S. Women's Open 2010 proved that Creamer is a top notch golfer. She was up against the top golfer from around the world. Facing players like Na Yeon Choi, Suzann Pettersen, Brittany Lang, Yani Tseng and the upcoming American Lexi Thompson is not easy.
Similarly, her performance at the 2009 Solheim Cup was amazing. She won the single match against the Norwegian Suzann Pettersen with a score of 3 to 2.
This was in addition to her performance in the team match earlier in the tournament. On the first day, she was paired with Cristie Kerr. She faced off Suzann Pettersen and Sophie Gustafson and came out with a 1-up win.
2011 was not her year. She did not win a single tournament. Many believe that this has got to do with her thumb injury. Although she said that she has recovered, her game apparently did not.
Nevertheless, Paula Creamer managed to perform well in 2011. She scored a tie for the second place in two tournaments, the HSBC Women's Champions and the CME Group Titleholders.
Given this performance, she was selected for the 2011 Solheim Cup. She performed brilliantly in the event.
2011 Solheim Cup saw Creamer posting three wins out of her four matches. She did, however lose in the singles. She was up against Catriona Matthew. Creamer lost with a 6 and 5 score.
Michelle Wie is another golfer who has a large fan following. Wie is known to be an aggressive player with a brilliant record as an amateur golfer.
Her professional career is not as good but it has managed to keep Wie in the top positions of the LPGA rankings.
Michelle Wie has just two LPGA wins so far. She won the 2009 Lorena Ochoa Invitational cup. She played excellent, scoring 275. She gained a 2-stroke win over the Paula Creamer.
In 2010, she won CN Canadian Women's Open by a narrow margin of 3 strokes. Her score was 276.
Michelle Wie’s biggest disappointment in 2012 was her missing the cut in the World Ladies Championship Salonpas Cup. Missing the cut by just one stroke is something that would haunt her for the rest of the year.
So, back to the big question: will the two players recover their form? The answer lies in the stats quoted above.
Paula Creamer is doing very well, despite her disabling thumb injury. She went under the knife and suffered through physiotherapy and pain.
She did bounce back in 2011, gaining the runner-up position in two tournaments. This is an indication that Creamer is regaining her shape and will do alright in the coming events.
Michelle Wie is another matter altogether. Her problem is lack of wins to convince her of her game. Many experts believe that a number two position in an upcoming event will boost Wie’s confidence. This is just what she needs at this crucial point in her
career.
