Only the educated Pens fans answer or somebody with the knowledge of hockey.

He was a Penguin for a grand total of 4 months. He was a rental player. Shero knew the risk in trying to get a rental player. Shero gave up three prospects for Dupuis and Hossa. Hossa showed interest in going to Detroit at the deadline. But the Wings wouldn't pay what Atlanta wanted. I'll admit there were a lot of fans here who were upset that we didn't get Hossa. If the cost of getting Hossa was too much then Shero shouldn't have made the deal. This shows the difference between Holland and Shero. Holland wasn't willing to mortgage the Wings future for Hossa. Hossa had a friend here in Tomas Kopecky. The Wings play the type of hockey that Hossa wanted. He also saw what was happening in Pittsburgh. He saw the Pens roster already being dismantled.

Of course he told the media he was interested in staying in Pitt, what was he suppose to say? No I hate Pitt I don't want to be here?

  1. I have no bad feelings towards Hossa. I didn't like or want him on the team before during or after the deal. But i wish him the best of luck, i respect him as a player and i'll admit he has very good qualities about him.

Hossa was brought here to help make the team go to the Finals.. Thanks to him and a few other key players, that happened.

The fact is, he made it such a strong point that he wanted to stay in Pittsburgh. He talked up the city like it was amazing and he thought he could see himself playing here for years. Now, if he was doubting him staying here - he should have just done all the Penguin fans a favor and kept his mouth shut.

But, what really makes me mad is that Hossa wanted a 1 year deal. Shero offered him a 5, 6 AND 7 year deal. He turned them down. Shero said in an interview that if a 1 year deal was what Hossa was looking for, he should have SPOKE UP and told Shero that's what he wanted, and he would have gotten that offer. But instead, he didn't open his mouth and he left.

  2. Why would anyone blame Hossa?

It's not his fault Pittsburgh gave up a good chunk of the team for a rental player. It's management's fault, they gambled and lost on a trade.

Hossa had no choice in moving to Pittsburgh in the first place. He was uprooted from Atlanta near the end of the season and was SENT to the Penguins ... he didn't volunteer to play there and then this summer decide to play somewhere else. Everyone who follows hockey knew he was a free agent this year and would be testing the market.

He and Dan Cleary are buddies, so it shouldn't have come as that much of a surprise that he'd join Detroit.

  3. ^ NIPS saved me from having to write basically all the same stuff. My fingers thank you!

Only one thing I might add. From the interview I saw w/ Babs, he had already had contact w/ Hossa much earlier, and Marian had expressed the desire to play for Detroit.

  4. Its wasnt his choice to go to Pitt in the first place, its where he got traded. Atlanta got the best deal they could, and Hossa gets what he wants, and chance to win. Hate him all you want, but he was your best player in the finals, as well as Malone, and you lost him too... Its the basic mentality of a fan.. If you dont want to play here, I now hate you. Wings fans did it with Federov... Suck it up, you might think your the best fans, but it seems many of your players didnt think too much of your team, or they would have stayed.

  5. Yes...I actually wrote a myspace rant on Hossa...I shall cut and paste it...here....

Okay...so I AM glad the pens are rid of Hossa...for several reasons

    1.  I just never liked him...he struck me as a shmuck from the get go

    2. My cat didnt like him...seriously!  Several times when he came on the TV she would run up to it and smack him with her paw...shes a good judge of character (she does the same thing to Devorski (the ref in some games) and we all know what a douchebag he is...

    3.  and yes I did hold the loss of Armstrong against him

    4.  He costs too much and I dont really think he was worth that kind of money

HOWEVER...the way he went about leaving was shady...especially after Sidney offered to take a salary cut even though he was already contracted to keep him here if he wanted more money!  That is Loyalty people...and its just as important as being a good hockey player...maybe more so...would we Pittsburghers love Mario the way we do if he had simply skipped around teams his whole stint and just happened to finish out his carrear in Pittsburgh?  h**l no!  And he still would have been just as great of a player...but thats all he would have been...not a hero.  And if that is what Hossa wants...good for him...I think every player strives to be remembered like Mario but its not possible if all you have is the skill and not the heart!  I see that type of a player in Sid...he proves it more and more with each season, and I hope I'm right in saying he will be a legend to Pittsburgh for many more reasons than just being a great player.  It would be really nice if the same panned out for Malkin, but I'm not sure, perhaps it's just because he doesn't have the same panache as Sid (which I don't blame him for, as he is still trying to master the language, I hope as that develops he can do more publicity and cement himself more firmly in our hearts)

As for the trades before the start of this season, who DO I regret losing....I regret losing Ryan Malone, he was a good player, funny and a hometown boy...also for the fact that his wife recently had a baby and it would have been nice for them to be able to stay in town where he grew up.

But most of all I regret the loss of Laraque...I know, he was just a bruiser but HEAR ME OUT!!!  He had good presence, I liked hearing what he had to say, he had a sense of humor and for some reason I really like having a player around like that (thats probably why my fave pen is Talbot, when we lost Armstrong i wasnt sure who else we had lost and I didnt see Talbot on the ice and I started crying....yes really...I'm pregnant, what do you people want from me?), and he dove right in and did things for the kids in our community....I am really gonna miss him....a lot of these trades I think had a lot to do with Hossa too...it felt like the team was collecting up cash because he showed every intention of staying so we lost some good people because he misled us.

So all in all, my hope in all this?  Hossa does his 1 year at 7.5 mill with The Red Wings...The Pens tear them a new orafice this year, and Hossa bombs the whole season and goes up next year barely clearing 6 figures (hey it could happen!)  and of course...he doesnt try to come back here!  Cmon now, we still haven't all gotten over Jagr leaving us and its been HOW long?!  Im not saying it was right or wrong, im just sayin we Pittsburghers are good at holding a grudge!

    hope that clears it up....

Im adding a PS to Vinny....Mario didnt hold our team "Hostage" he was trying to get a politician whom our entire city hates to stop acting like a moron and get on the same page as he was, because the politician was damaging a deal that was good for the pens, AND for the city to line his own pocket....please dont discuss issues you know nothing about....especially when it comes to a great man like Mario....

  6. I as a WINGS fan have said my peace on this subject a few times!

Its clear to me that HOSSA wanted to be a WING and that any reasonable offer he got from them he would accept..... Why? The Wings were the only team he gave a chance to offer a one year deal!

PITT would have gave him a good chance to win the CUP (yes thats true).... but I think he must have seen a few things during his tenure there that made him decide that they wouldnt win the CUP in the next few years... otherwise he would have stayed, RIGHT? I can only speculate what they might be... Therrien? But anyway...... The Wings core group are all mostly his age 27-30..... Hmmmm..... not 19-22.... maybe that had a factor in his decision? I dont know. Also, he has stated for a long time how much he admired the way Coach Babcocks teams play and their style of play!!!!! Maybe another factor that went into his decision? We know that Illitch is known for taking care of his players and staff and we know he knew that being good friends with Kopecky. Just maybe after his tenure in ATL he was looking for a situation like that and he didnt see that in PITT? Again.. I dont know............. no one outside of PITT, their management, and HOSSA really  knows what the deal is..... and neither seems to want to talk about it!

I do know this.... as the season progresses  we will hear things that arent being said right now. I am sure there are a few major  (minor or a combination of both) reasons HOSSA chose to play for DET, and those things might come out in interviews during the season! Until then, you and I and everyone outside of the situation can only speculate as to why HOSSA chose DET over PITT!

  7. As a Pens fan, I do feel kind of betrayed by Hossa's departure for two reasons... it was to the team that destroyed us in the finals and it was for a one year contract. Basically, in my mind, the only reason to accept a one year contract is cuz you believe that's all you will need to win the cup with that team. And yeah, that kind of feels like a slap in the face, but Detroit is an awesome team and more than likely they will win the cup next year.

But no one really should have expected Hossa to stick around Pittsburgh. He was a rent-a-player and I didn't expect him to stay. I didn't even really like the fact that we gave up Colby Armstrong, Erik Christensen, Angelo Esposito, and draft picks to get him. Right now, I would rather have Armstrong back than deal with the problems we are facing in this free agency. But yeah, that's just me.

Even though I have these feelings towards Hossa right now, he's still done a lot for the Pens and will still get my respect every time the two teams face each other.

  8. *sigh*

Speaking for myself right now, the immediate news of his departure wasn't what shocked me, I was sure he was a goner, it was the fact that he left to go to Detroit, the team that just f*cked him over a month ago in the Stanley Cup Finals, he joined. We knew when acquiring him at the trade deadline that he was not going to remain a Penguin, and that's an unplanned risk you take in the salary-cap era. The fact that he left the Penguins to join the team that has just won the Cup, so that he can ride them there again instead of stepping up and being 'the man' and helping the team that lost so much to get him to Pittsburgh is what truly left a sour taste in my mouth, and would anyone's. I forget that it even happened. Move on now. We have a stronger team right now than we did at the start of last season, and that's all we need. Stop talking about it, it's over.

P.S. I don't 'hate' him, that's immature. Hockey is a business, and apparently the majority of Pens fans have never experienced free agency before. Not surprised............but yeah.

RedWingsDynasty - LMAO Are you talking to ME? If so, are you f*cking illiterate? I said that I FORGET IT EVEN HAPPENED. MOVE ON NOW. STOP TALKING ABOUT IT, IT'S OVER. That's what I said, only this time I put it in caps for ya. That means I don't care, and I was only speaking for myself. Drop it. Nobody said Pittsburgh was Hossa's home, and I SAID "We knew when acquiring him at the trade deadline that he was not going to remain a Penguin, and that's an unplanned risk you take in the salary-cap era." The reason that I WAS a bit bitter towards Marian like 3 weeks ago was that he went to Detroit "so that he can ride them there[to the SCF] again instead of stepping up and being 'the man' and HELPING the team that LOST SO MUCH TO GET HIM TO PITTSBURGH" I'd say more, but I really don't feel like it or give a f*ck what you think, so keep on livin thinking we care. It's over. Okay. Have fun with that you infected pile of radioactive manure.

Vinny - Please don't try to argue a point about "booing Jagr" because only the classless retards who know nothing about hockey and have no sense of what he's done for us boo him. That's like asking "Why do Americans boo "O Canada".....we don't. Only the ignorant classless people do.

Kate - Queen is the greatest. I feel the same exact way. Good stuff.

  9. my brother is one and he said "we hate him in every way because of what he put the pens through!"

  10. Some Pens fans feel betrayed that a rent-a-player left for a better team. It is surprising that Hossa would abandon a multi-year contract on a improving hockey club for a one-year deal with similar money.

Puck You-  I really don't get where you are coming from with Federov. I don't think anyone in Detroit hates Feds.  He wasn't a rent-a-player that left us like Hossa, he was an established superstar in Detroit for years.

  11. We Pittsburgh Penguins fans, (the best fans in the league) hate Marian Hossa because he is a backstabber, and a turncoat.  He turned down a guarenteed multi-year 40 million dollar offer from the oilers to get a measly 7.4 million from the "red wings" from Detroit. He thinks that he has the best chance of winnin the cup next year with them, but guess what...they don't. The Pittsburgh Penguins will win the cup next year.  I think Hossa will have a terrible season next year, along with the rest of the  "red wings" GO PENS

  12. Well...he did leave them for the team who beat them in the finals...wouldn't you be a little ticked too?

  13. I am a Penguin fan, I am not bitter towards Marian, if anything more towards the agent but it is more the situation.  If the intentions had been none before free agency he wasn't going to sign the Penguins could have gotten a better winger during free agency.  So many of them were snatched up in day 1.  If the Pens would have the jnowledge he wouldn't be there next year then, they could signed better players.  Well Shero did not give up as much as you think.  The draft pick espisto is awful.  Yeah the first round pick hurts and losing colby and christensen hurt as well but cooke is a great plucky type player.  No but if he wasn't interested in Pitt he shouldn't have said he was.  To shock I didn't like Jagr when he ended up with the rangers.  If Jeff Carter went to the rangers, you would hate him.

  14. They also hated Jagr when he left and i guarantee they would hate Mario if he left in his prime....they will disagree but he is still there

Cordelias Mama. you just proved why i hate "some" Pens fans

you expect him to take less money for you? because Sid did that is a Truly Pathetic answer and overly greedy at the minimum...Let me see you volunteer to take a pay cut at your job or not leave for a better chance to accomplish your goals

  15. Pittsburgh fans in general confuse me. Why is it that they boo Jaromir Jagr... he didn't exactly leave on his own terms, wasn't he dealt at the trade deadline to Washington.

Why do Pens fan not boo Mario Lemieux. He was more than ready to take the Pens to Kansas City? He basically held your fans and the city hostage with "I'll move them... I swear!!!! I'll do it..."

Maybe someone can help clear things up with me.

The Wings have a long history of players taking less money to play in Detroit. They look at it as a family.

Kim- Ahhh. Thanks for the clear up, was always a little iffy about that topic.

BTW You ever think Hossa wanted that 1 year deal with another team perhaps the Wings. Shero could of offered him a 1 year deal worth 9 mil would of still declined.  He simply felt Detroit had the better chance at the Cup.

Cordelias Mama-  I take a bitter table for 2 please.  I kindly asked will someone explain, or clear up the topic.  But I got a golden answer from you.  Thank you, heres a thumps up.

  16. I think only the people that spent the $75+ for a Hossa Pens jersey are pissed.  Now what?

I didn't like the fact that Hossa said he'd rather take less and play for a good team, when asked about his future.  It implied he meant staying with the Pens (though he never outright said that), all the while knowing they couldn't give him what he could potentially get on the free market.  Then he went and signed a one year deal with the Wings.  And then said he felt they offered more of a chance to give him a ring.  Basically insulting the Pens, his teammates, the city, etc.

One of, I believe, Shero's biggest mistakes was, was giving him as much time as he did to "think about" the deal Shero offered him.  In the meantime, they lost Malone, Roberts, et al because Shero was waiting to see what Hossa wanted to do.  But, in Shero's defense, he has publicly said that Hossa never made any indication that he was interested in just a one year deal, otherwise, Shero would have worked with him on that.

I don't necessarily blame Hossa..  But what happens if the repeat doesn't happen?  Then he looks like a back-stabbing, non-teammate type of player.  Pens fans are passionate and we were pissed when they traded who they did to get Hossa, then loved him when he actually lived up to the trade.  We thought he fit in nicely, and Hossa himself made it seem like he liked where he was at.

It's like, as someone on here said, breaking up with a significant other.  Everything's passionate at first, then, as it wears on, the passion fades, and someone moves on.  Hossa moved.

I'm pissed, only because if Hossa was thinking about just a one year deal, he should've at least let Shero know, to give him that option.  Instead, he waited, and in the meantime, they lost some good vets that we could've kept with the money they were offering Hossa.  No big surprise after Hossa left, the Pens then signed Orpik and Fleury to big deals.  Now they had the money open.

I wish Hossa well, but will not hesitate to laugh if he falls flat on his face.  But I'm a Pens fan.

PS. it feels like they lost so many players because of Hossa, first in the trade, then while they were waiting for Hossa's response to their offer.  That pisses me off too.

holy c**p, why is redwingsdynasty so freaking bitter?  d**n dude, I told amber this too.  i work for a psychiatrist.  if you need therapy for your anger issues and obvious hatred of pens fans let me know.  btw, spend one day in pittsburgh at any time of year and you will see just how much this city "doesn't like hockey."

  17. Now do I hate Marian? No, no way. Am I still kind upset? No....disappointed is more like it.

It was all up to Hossa. His choice. We understand 100%.........but I will be the first to say he DID lead the PENS organization on about staying here. He asked for a longer contract, so we offered that to him....then he turned around and said he wanted a one year deal. He couldn't get his facts straight.......A lot of fans took it as he was "lieing"

Am I mad at Marian? No. I would have liked him to pick a team I could cheer for him on....he's a great player, but he chose my least favorite team.

I hate seeing some people complain about Hossa.....certain people that is. I mean there's a video on youtube of some fan buring their Hossa shirt........now that's a tad bit out of hand. I only joked about burning mine.........I folded it up and placed it in my box of hockey c**p that I find special....Yes, I find Marian Hossa special. He helped us (the Pittsburgh Penguins) make it all the way to 2 wins away from the Stanley Cup. I am very grateful for him, but I do remember he was only here for what, 4 months. We'll be fine without, and he'll be fine elsewhere.

I'd love to tell Marian 'thank you' for what he did to this team. He did help this team out in a lot of ways. But I'd also like to say good ridance.

Honestly, don't listen to all of the whining by the PENS fan. They're upset...I understand, but some are taking it a bit out of hand, as I'm sure most fans do at sometimes.

There IS no real reason to be bitter. Everyone is going to say something like "he lied", "he lead us on".....whatever. I'm still thinking many people forgot how short of time he was here.

.....It's not like Evgeni Malkin left us.

Sorry if my answer is a little confusing.........I'm half way asleep, eating and watching TV and I'm willing to bet my answer is a little confusing and un-organizied to follow....

REDWINGSDYNASTY.....You're the biggest f'ing HOMER I've ever seen in my life. Dear lord.

GO PENS.....I'm wasn't surprised one bit he joined them. Ever heard the QUEEN song "IF YOU CAN'T BEAT"? One of my favourite songs ever and everytime I hear it it reminds me of Marian.

  18. I dont think many Pens fans realize that he didnt just decide to go Detroit because they won the cup this year.  He has wanted to play in Detroit for a while.  He said at the deadline that Detroit was one of the top teams he wanted to go to.  They just didnt have the assets to offer Atlanta that the Pens had.  I would be truely shocked if he didnt at least have the idea of coming to Detroit this off season in his head even before he was traded to the Pens.

Cordelias Mama, Im not trying to be a complete prick but I have a problem with a few things you said.  First, the players who left Pittsburgh would have been gone reguardless of what Hossa did.  Secondly, Hossa turned down 3 contract offers from the Pens, so how does that show that he had every intention of re-signing with them.  Finally, when it came to what he said to the media, he chose his words carefully.  He said he would accept less money to play with a good team LIKE Pittsburgh.  He didnt say he would accept less money to stay in Pittsburgh specifically.  He wasnt going to come right out and say "I dont want to play here anymore".  You can bet he was a lot more forthcoming behind closed doors with Shero so you cant really say they lost all those people because of Hossa.

Reguardless of all this, nobody on the Pens gave Pittsburgh a better chance at winning the cup than Hossa.  He was far and away their best player in the finals.  Pittsburgh got what they paid for from Hossa.  If the rest of the roster stepped up like he did, the cup could have ended up in Pittsburgh this year.

Add: I just read the details for this question.  Sorry, I didnt realize was repeating a lot of the same points that you already made, lol.

  19. I am not a Pen's fan, nor do I have anything against them. So, if you would be so kind as to accept an unbiased opinion, I'll give you mine.

Unless I missed something, Shero didn't seem to try real hard after making his initial offer to Hossa. Atlanta always seemed more interested in what they could get for him than what he was able to provide the team. Ottawa seemed ready to trade him for whatever they could get, Heatley may have been in the right place at the right time. For a player with a boatload of skill he sure seems to wear out his welcome in a hurry.

While you say "The Wings play the type of hockey that Hossa wanted", are you sure Hossa plays the right brand of hockey for Detroit? To play for the Red Wings, a guy has to put the team first, I'm not convinced Hossa does that.

  20. I'm not bitter, and I'm a Pen's fan. He was injured a portion of the time, and this is his first good play series in his career. He's just another big name guy on a short term basis.

    To the guy below me:

Jagr was a good player here, but he indeed wanted traded. His last few words uttered to the media in a Penguins Jersey was: "I'm dying here in Pittsburgh."

And why boo Mario?? The city of Pittsburgh willingly  payed over half of the money for the Pirates and Steelers new stadiums. Mario tried in numerous years to work out a deal with the city and each year he was shut down. And Mario was the reason the Pens stayed when he bought them.

  21. Hossa's loyalty is not to Pittsburgh.  Pittsburgh was not his home.  Pittsburgh was a sh*tty hotel that he was forced to stay in due to a deal made by GMs.  The fact that he went to the team he lost to in the Cup finals pisses you off?  That's great, he wasn't a Pittsburgh Penguin, he was temporary help.  Part time.  Todd Bertuzzi and Mathieu Schneider left the wings right after Anaheim won the cup.  Guess where they went?  Anaheim.  I was glad to see both of them go, because we replaced them with Brian Rafalski and guys who stepped up like Johan Franzen.  Get over it, I've never seen anybody get so emotionally attached to a deadline acquisition and then sob, b*tch, moan, and whine about it until the next seasons begins.

Barely anybody in Pittsburgh watches or follows hockey, and that much is clear.  The NHL isn't a charity organization.  Players are there to do their jobs, and then they get paid for it.  Business transactions are made when certain parties feel they can do a better job elsewhere.  His job isn't to help a team win because it's balls haven't dropped yet.  It's not to help the underdog succeed and provide a heartwarming story of the compassion that Marian Hossa decided to fabricate in 4 months because he selected to help the city of Pittsburgh at random.  I'm truly sorry that he didn't help your team win a Stanley Cup.  Your team and your fans are both pathetic.  You really expected everything to be handed to you didn't you?  You thought having Cindy Crosby the "Messiah" of hockey automatically earned you the right to have the Cup, and like Buffalo, the quaint, naive idea that somehow you were deserving of the Hockeytown title.  We don't sell out tickets?  That's because ******* in Pennsylvania buy foreign cars, and as a result our economy blows ***.

Marian Hossa knows he can't win with the Pittsburgh Penguins.  He knows where he can win a cup, and if he didn't think he was going to win one by coming to Detroit, he wouldn't have signed for "only" 7.4 "measly" MILLION dollars.  Not bad for somebody who didn't produce as much as guys like Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk (producing includes defense all of you ignorant Penguins offensive stat machines) and is getting paid $700,000 a year more than the highest paid of the two Selke finalists.  Pittsburgh was going to be broken down after this season anyway.  You're not mad at Malone, Conklin, Ruutu, Orpik, Roberts, and whoever else left your team?  Maybe you should have done some research on your Pens' contracts.  Are you sad that you don't have the slightest, remote chance of winning the Cup next year?  There are 28 other teams that aren't going to win either, and that never even had a guy like Marian Hossa come to their club to show them what it's like to be a grown *** man in the postseason so quit crying.  Take this playoff run as a gift from Marian Hossa and the Red Wings because your group of sad, scared, and confused little boys needed the free lesson.

  22. Weel he signed with the Red Wings. The team that beat you guys in the Stanley Cup finals. So I can see some hatred in Pens fans. It's all about location and money these days.
